  How to build a fence
"A guide to building a featheredge fence at home"

When building your own featheredge fence at home it is important to take into consideration the production stages and the work involved.

We have put together a 5 stage guide to help you understand what is involved into putting together a structurally sound featheredge fence.

There are many positives to building your own fence, the most obvious of which is the cost savings. Not having to pay for labour will dramatically decrease the over-all cost of your fence.

All our timber is pressure treated to user class 4 which offers a 15 year guarantee.

Posts:

Dig 600mm holes every 1.8 metres for the posts, making sure to keep them as small as possible to ensure minimal concrete wastage. Insert the 2.4m 100mm x 100mm into the holes and fill with concrete, usually 1-2 bags depending on the ground and the size of the hole.

Gravel Board:

Run the 22 x 150mm gravel board along the bottom of the posts, this is for the feather edge boards to sit on . The gravel board makes the fence look neater and provides a level base for the boards so it is quicker to fit them.

Rails:

Fix a 3.6m, 38mm x 38mm rail to the top, middle and bottom of the posts using 100mm screws and galvanised nails. These are to fix the feather edge boards to.

Featheredge Boards:

Each feather edge is 1.65m, when combined with the gravel board this will create a 1.8m tall fence. The boards are overlapped by 25mm meaning you need 8 for every metre run of fence. The boards are fixed to the rails using 40mm or 50mm galvanised clout nails.

Capping:

To finish the fence off and make it look a little neater most people use a rebated capping. This is moulded from a 50mm x 50mm piece of redwood giving a nice smooth finish and a clean top to the finished product.
